This week, rather than fight Osama Bin Laden, President Bush decided to make a web page for him--on the White House web site.
Rather than trying to silence a terrorist organization that uses the media to paralyze Americans with fear, President Bush--in his infinite wisdom--has amplified their voices, creating a new page on the White House web site filled with nasties from Osama Bin Laden.
I wonder what's next? Does President Bush plan to take out a full-page ad in the New York Times on Osama Bin Laden's behalf?
As jarringly stupid as this all seems, the real question should be clear to every American capable of clicking a mouse: Why would President Bush bend over backwards to publish the messages of Osama Bin Laden when it is well known that Bin Laden uses the media to frighten people?
The answer: Because President Bush long ago stopped fighting Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda--having switched over full-time to fighting a political campaign against the American people.
While Americans view Bin Laden as the biggest threat to our national security, President Bush views him as his biggest campaign asset.
While Americans want the U.S. military to track down and capture Bin Laden, President Bush wants to keep Bin Laden in box so he can pull him out whenever he needs to strike out at Democrats campaigning for office.
While Americans want President Bush held accountable for not finding Osama Bin Laden and wasting thousands of American lives Iraq, President Bush wants to hide behind Bin Laden whenever politics gets tough for the White House.
The Progressive answer to this cynical act by President Bush should be to focus attention on the President's true goal:
President Bush's goal is not to catch Bin Laden to make the American people safer, but to use Bin Laden to make the American people more afraid.
It is a simple way to maintain control of the issue.
