This week the big craze in politics will be calls for Donald Rumsfeld to resign--kind of like an end of summer sale.
The pressure comes from Democrats pushing for a vote of 'no confidence' against Rumsfeld, but curiously: Republicans seem to be on board. Or rather, the Republicans have generated a strange talking point--saying Rumsfeld is a "nice guy," but a "bad secretary"--that seems to suggest they are willing to throw Rumsfeld from the train.
Do they really want Rumsfeld to resign? Probably not. But Republicans are feeling the pressure of an election season that has been framed an 'accountability' frame. While the White House accuses the country of appeasing the Nazis, voters (remember them) now see the 2006 elections as a chance to make the Republicans answer for the mess in Iraq...and the mess in New Orleans...and mess in the economy...and the mess in government...and the mess in...
